| What is
Judo? The
word "judo" literally means "Gentle Way", and was originally derived from
the ancient art of Jiu-Juitsu, which is a system of unarmed self- defence.
Judo is a clean competitive sport, exciting to
watch, and one of the fastest growing sports in Canada today. In the 1964
Olympics in Tokyo, Doug Rogers won a silver medal for Canada. Since then,
Canadian Judo has shown much progress in both the Pan American Games and World
Competitions. In 1981 , Kevin Doherty
(Ajax Budokan chief instructor) took a bronze medal
at the World Judo Championships breaking a 17-year drought. Since then
other Canadian judo players have had much success. Phil Takahashi captured
a bronze medal at the World Championships in Holland, Mark Berger won a bronze
medal at the 1984 Olympic Games and Nicholas Gill recently retired with 3 World
and 2 Olympic medals.

Is there any Danger in
learning Judo?
There is less chance of injury in judo than
most other contact sports. From a student's very first lesson he/she
will be under the close supervision of the instructors. Instructors
are qualified and certified men and women who have vast experience and
knowledge regarding different types of students and their specific needs.
The first thing a student learns is how to fall properly so he/she will
not injure themselves. When this has been accomplished to a
satisfactory degree, the instructor then teaches the student how to apply
various judo throws and holds. As students improve and progress,
they learn to co-ordinate mind and body at which time a great sense of
mental relaxation will be experienced. |
|
How long will it
take to learn Judo?
The length of time depends on the individual,
how often a student attends classes and how hard he/she studies.
Students may continue to learn and improve indefinitely. |
